fin de semanaaaaa

Another great weekend! Lovely weather too.

Friday I had class, of course. Afterwards, I went to a mall in the suburb of Leganés with some engineering ladies. Then I came home and got dinner at the cutest little Italian place with the roommates. It was legit and extremely delicious. And what better to finish off the night than watching a Disney Channel movie in Spanish and Skyping with my Big!

Yesterday I went for a run in Parque del Oeste and ran around the Templo de Debod, which is an ancient Egyptian temple that was rebuilt in Spain in the 60s as a gift for helping Egypt save some ancient temples. Really pretty area and a great view of the city, too! Pics to come, I promise. Then Gillian made cookies and we had friends over and it was just a lovely afternoon. Went out to Kapital with some friends until the wee hours of the morning, ending our adventures with 5AM chocolate con churros :)

Today, we ambitiously woke up at 9:30AM for what has become our Sunday routine of breakfast at the Chess Cafe and then El Rastro. We also went out for Indian food, after which we came home and took a much-needed nap. Now I'm just studying and trying to mentally prepare myself for the week ahead. I can't believe we're starting March already!! Gonna be a fun month, for sure. Oh and don't forget midterms! Some fun happenings this month include a trip to Granada with IES (to see the Alhombra, a really old citadel that we're studying in my Art&Arch class) and hopefully taking a day trip to Valenica for Las Fallas! Ahhh yes.

Much love to everyone at home and elsewhere! Missin' you folks like crazy and wish you were all here to share this experience with me. I guess this will have to do ;)

PS I'm sorry I've been really bad about pics. My camera battery has been dead for a while and I just keep forgetting to charge it. Boo me.

Estoy contento :)

The past two days have been really great.

First of all, the weather has been phenomenal. Sunny and 60s and it's supposed to get even higher by the weekend. If you know me, you know I thrive on sunshine.

Yesterday I did my usual Tuesday thing. Slept in 'til about 9, dragged myself to the gym. Which, as much as I hate to admit it, always makes me feel better. But don't tell my boyfriend. Then I had class and such as usual. Except my Art and Architecture class took place in the Museo Nacional del Prado aka. one of the most prestigious museums in Madrid/Spain/Europe. Really cool stuff. After my class at Carlos III, Mateo, Beth, and I went to 100 Montaditos for, what else, montaditos! Which, in case I haven't mentioned, are little itty bitty sandwiches. And there are 100 kinds at this place. YUM. Overall, just a great day. Real morale booster. OH AND I GOT MY MOMMA'S VALENTINES DAY PACKAGE :D

Today was nice as well. Did the class thing again. Then I went to Torres Kio with Steve and Will to take some fun pictures. The Torres Kio are these two buildings that were built on a slant. Like so:

So yeah. It was just fun. We'd learned about the buildings in my art and architecture course and it was cool to see them in person. Plus we (mostly Steven) took some really cool pics :)

Weekend! + Spanish friends!

Weekend?

Friday night: Out for tapas at El Tigre. Basically, you buy a decent-sized drink at this place and they just keep feeding you tapas. Croquetas, patatas bravas, slices of baguette with chorizo and ham and cheese and just yummy things. Pretty much my new favorite place. Om nom nom.

Saturday: For some reason, slept until 2:30PM. Yeah. I think it may be because our blinds were closed and therefore my body had no idea what time of day it was because there was no sunlight. Regardless, I was a slug. That is, until we went out to celebrate my roommate Gillian's birthdayyy! Yayyyyy :) OH! Booked my flight to Ibiza (an island east of Spain) at the end of April with all the other roomies for Sari's birthday. One last hurrah before we all peace out. Basically: just gonna be a really awesome time.

Sunday: HAPPY BIRTHDAY GILLIAN! Went out for indian food for lunch in this cute little neighborhood near Lavapiés. Yummmm I love indian food :) Continued my slugness into the remainder of the weekend. Oh and I studied too.

TODAY! Ugh. Monday. 9AM class. However, afterwards Sam and I met up with some Spanish students, Sergio and Diego. We chatted with them for a while in English and Spanish, taught them some English slang, learned about the different languages within Spain, and various other things. What I learned today:

Yo soy torpe. - I am clumsy
Actualmente - Right now (NOT actually)
Normalmente is used more often then frecuentemente. Both mean normally/usually/frequently.
recoger - to pick up
equivocarse - to be mistaken

Hooray for learning and being able to practice my Spanish! Really though, I think this is just what I need. Sweet. Studying for the rest of the day. Might make something fancy for dinner. Who knows. I've been really bad about working out lately since it's been so cloudy and not nice for running. Ah well. TOMORROW.

Hasta luego!
(Which Sergio taught me how to say all smushed together, sounding more "stago")

Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy :)

I suppose I should do this now and get it over with, considering I have my first midterm this Thursday. Yikes. So here we go.

CAGLIARIIIIIII!!

Friday: Got up ridiculously early to catch multiple buses to Madrid-Barajas airport. Arrived in Cagliari and met up with my dearest big, Susanna. Antonio, the gentleman who owned the bed&breakfast we were staying at, picked us up from the airport.
On the way to the house, he told us about the sights to see in the surrounding areas and pointed out where we could catch the bus to the city and the beach. All in Italian, of course. Oh and by the way, apparently, Andrea is the Italian way of saying 'Andrew'. So Antonio was expecting Susanna and a young man named Andrew at the airport that morning rather than myself haha. But anyways. The Neptune B&B was SO cute and SO clean and just what we needed for our weekend. There was another woman who was staying there for Friday night who was from Germany, and she was very nice too. As soon as we got in and threw our stuff down in our little double room, we hopped on a bus to go into the city of Cagliari to do some exploring. On the way, we saw REAL LIVE FLAMINGOES in the lagoon and it was wonderful. It was great to get familiar with traveling by bus this weekend, since my main mode of transportation has been Madrid's Metro. But anyways.
It was all just so beautiful, friends. 60s and sunshine and just lovely. We looked around in some shops (I bought a pretty ring!), aet our much-needed panini by the pier, and tried looking for a castle that actually didn't exist. Woops. The whole city is pretty much on a hill, which makes for quite a hike. But when we found ourselves at the top, it was just such a gorgeous view of the sea and the whole city and everything! We looked for a gelateria where I had gelato for the very first time. So. Yummy. And then we came back down to the pier to watch the sun set. We hopped back on the bus to the little town where our B&B was to get some pizza, which was also yummy. Finally, we crashed around 10:30-11PM. It had been a very long day.

Saturday (the photos of this day's adventures are courtesy of Susanna, since my camera battery died on Friday): Up and at 'em early! Antonio set out a delicious breakfast for us with juice, coffee, pastries, EVERYTHING. Great way to start the day. So today, we had decided to hit up the beautiful beaches of the area. We would take the bus from Cagliari to Pula, and then from Pula to Chia. Cagliari to Pula was a success. We arrived and walked from Pula to the beach in Nora, which seemed a lot further than the guy at the newspaper stand told us it was gonna be haha. But we get to Nora and were greeted by palm trees and a picturesque coastline. We also had the opportunity to go look at some ancient ruins, but didn't really wanna pay 5.50 to do so. Ah well.
Took some pics, enjoyed the sunshine, and back to Pula we go. This is when it got interesting. We planned to take the bus from Pula to Chia, which was where some of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia were. We stop in Chia, which appears to be in the middle of nowhere save for two resorts in the area. The bus pulls away and we realize that there is absolutely no one around. No one. Resorts and restaurants closed, very few cars passing by, and even the bus schedule had been taken down for the season. Apparently Chia is a really happenin' spot....in the SUMMER. Woops. So here we are, stranded in the Italian countryside like something out of a horror movie. We sat on the side of the road, contemplating out situation and trying to think of what to do.
We weren't even sure if another bus was gonna come along, but decided to stick it out for at least an hour just to see. Two videos and some silly pictures later, a bus pulls up and we are SO excited. We decided that was enough venturing for one day and back to Cagliari we go to try to find a more populated beach near the city. We managed to find a beach and catch a bus to said beach just in time to watch the sunset. Mind you, we were bundled up and hungry, but it really was beautiful nonetheless. I can't even imagine what this place (and Chia haha) is like in the summer.
Our long day of travel called for some panini. And more gelato. And crepes. And chocolate. And finally, we return to our little pizza joint by the B&B for pizza and really cheap red wine. Oh yes.

Sunday: Time to go home! Up early (because the only flight from Cagliari to Madrid is at 10:25AM. Lame.), ride to the airport. Get creeped on in the airport, putz around the duty free shops. And then it is time for farewell. On the plan ride home, a British (?) family with the cutest little boy (maybe, like, not even two years old) sat across the aisle from me. The little boy came over and poked me, waking me up from my nap. We then played with the seat belts and tray tables and he sat in my lap and looked out the window at the clouds until he returned to his mummy and passed out asleep. Probably the best plane ride ever.

So here I am, back in my apartment and dreading classes tomorrow. Aindrea and Sari and I took a run to McDonald's (woops), so I'm pretty content. Gonna Skype with a certain someone and then it's off to bed. What a great weekend though :) Was great to see my dear friend again and get a taste of the culture of a different country. Italy is just marvelous and I can't wait to go to Sicily in April!!

Feelings.

Holaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Well tomorrow's the big day. Flyin' to Cagliari, Italy to meet Susanna for the weekend! We're staying at the cutest little bed-and-breakfast and are gonna bike to the beach and the city and eat really yummy food. HUZZAH :)

Just another gloriously sunny day in Madrid. I am seriously in love with the sunshine. I've been here almost five weeks and we've only had, like, one rainy weekend. Every day it's blue skies and sunshine. Love it. Today before class, I walked to Plaza de España and just sat by one of the huge fountains, sippin on a fruit smoothie. LIFE IS GOOD, FRIENDS.

Today was the first time I really got frustrated though. I needed to go put minutes on my phone and went back to the place where I bought it. Everything worked out, but it's still so hard for me to understand people and actually formulate coherent responses rather than just staring at them blankly and getting flustered. I went to go buy a gift for Susanna for her birthday and tried to check out in one line and couldn't understand where the lady was telling me to go instead, so I just gave up and left without getting anything (Don't worry, Big. I went elsewhere haha). Then I went to the bookstore to find an easy book to read and a lady asked me a question about the book I was holding and I just had no idea. *sigh* But it will get better. At least that's what everyone is telling me haha Ah well. Practice, practice, practice.

Alright, well I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. You know there's gonna be a ginormous post here on Monday ;)

el fin de semana de bien tiempo!

What a lovely weekend :)

Yesterday: Woke up around noonish and decided to go for a run in El Parque de Oeste, which is a park across the street from my apartment. I am paying for this bit of ambitiousness today as my gluteus maximus and my quadriceps are SCREAMING at me. Ohhhh but it was so gorgeous out. Sunny and about 65F. Everyone was out and about, riding bikes, running, skateboarding. Just lovely weather. I didn't really do much for the rest of the day because I was feeling a bit icky. But overall, very relaxing :)

Today (current temp: 64F): Woke up around 8:30 or so to go get breakfast with Gillian and a her friends Rachel and Kelsey. We went to this place called Chess Cafe, which claimed to have the best orange juice in Madrid.
And oh boy, did they. We had crepes with nutella, eggs, bacon, toast, cafe con leche, and a huge tall glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. Everything was so yummy and each of our meals cost just under 5 euro. I love how easy it is to get a meal here for just a few Euro. There's a bar near my university where you can get a good sized hamburger and a caña of beer for 2.50 Euro. Fantastic. So after we'd finished our lovely sunny breakfast, we decided to go to El Rastro again. I was finally able to get a better, birds-eye view of the market. Just so you can see how busy and crowded and awesome it is.
I was a good girl this time and didn't spend any money because I need to save for my little trip to Italy this weekend. But it was still great to walk around and take everything in. THEN Gillian and I went to Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which was just down the street. Admission to the museum is free on Sundays, so we figured we'd hit it up. We mostly meandered around the modern art exhibits, which included lots of works based on the Spanish civil war in the late 1930s. Lots of propaganda and angsty drawings about the government.
A lot of works by Picasso were there too, including his famous Guernica painting. Pretty cool to think that I was able to see all that. An afternoon well-spent, I'd say.

So now I'm just stuffing my face and contemplating an afternoon siesta. Or homework. Hmmmmm. Bah.

Heyyyyyy Happy Super Bowl Sunday! GO PACKERS!! :)
(I need makeup/sleep/a shower. Egads.)

*waves*

Hi all. Just a quick update, nothing too exciting going on here. Last day of classes for the week and then the weekend, el fin de semana!

Oh but NEXT weekend, my dearest Susanna and I will be off to Cagliari which is on the coast of Sardenia, a small Italian island. Weeeee! So excited. But I told myself I really gotta work on balancing this whole being-a-student-in-such-a-culturally-rich-country deal before I can get too excited. It's getting better though!

Hugs to all! I hope you're enjoying all that snow ;) It's 50 and sunny here!! heehee.
